Heart of the Carolinas 2017: Long Live the Long Format!

Thank you to everyone who competed, volunteered, assisted riders or came to watch the seventh annual Heart of the Carolinas Three-Day Event and Horse Trials at Southern 8ths Farm in Chesterfield, SC. It was an incredible year with fit and well-performing horses and riders, perfect weather and an overflow of prizes from our fabulous sponsors.

This event is the country’s only venue where Beginner Novice, Novice and Training level riders can negotiate their ultimate test in a USEA recognized traditional long-format competition. This year, we added the brand new USEA Modified level horse trials and a Preliminary/Training level horse trials. For 2018 we are excited to add a Preliminary Horse Trials and Preliminary Three-Day, and we are working with the USEA Classics Committee to approve a Modified Three-Day.

We welcomed Chris Barnard as our new show jumping course designer, John Michael Durr as our new cross-country course designer, and Dylan Barry as our course builder. Megan Murfey also joined us as course decorator, and as a team they constructed stunning tracks for all levels.

Carol Kozlowski was once again our lead clinician and not only helped riders prepare for each phase of the long format, she helped out all day in the vet box, putting our riders at ease and helping tend to the horses.

Our technical delegate Sue Smithson and ground jury Janis Linnan and Lisa Anderson were also there to help riders every step of the way and make sure the competition ran smoothly. We pride ourselves in securing some of the best officials in the country every year!

Of course our volunteers are the ones who make it all happen. They are the backbone of the success of the competition. Many of our volunteers stay and help all week and we even have some sponsors dedicate their valuable time to jump judging, stewarding and scribing. We were also thrilled to have the All Veterans Group once again parachute in to volunteer on endurance day.

We are already looking ahead to next year and aim to continue providing the most fun and educational experience possible for all horses and riders. We hope you will join us at #HOTC2018!

Congratulations to our three-day winners and special award recipients!

Jim Baker Horsemanship Award – Cindy Phillips

Cindy Phillips withdrew Third Times the Charm from the Training Three-Day after dressage due to the horse having a sore foot. She could have packed up and gone home. Instead she decided to stay and cheer on her friends and help out where ever she could. She was an absolute hero in the vet box on endurance day. She also ran scores back to the barn when the score runner was held up. On Sunday, the organizers needed to be sure she would be at show show jumping to receive her award, so we told her we needed a volunteer to scribe in the judges box. She agreed, and then she helped us haul armfuls of prizes into the arena for the ceremony. Cindy went above and beyond not only for her horse but for her fellow competitors and as a volunteer for the event. It was our honor and pleasure to present her with the inaugural Jim Baker Horsemanship Award and we were thrilled to have Jim’s daughter Sarah at the event to present the award.
